Chronic pain and how I deal with it

There are numerous activities that I undertake in order to distract myself from my chronic pain. These activities are so follows;

Chronic pain solution one - Watching documentaries

My chronic pain management includes watching real crime documentaries and on days when I am in the middle of a bad chronic pain episode I will watch one episode after another.

Chronic pain solution two - Exercise

I have a real passion for ballet and it is a very good form of exercise for chronic pain relief in my opinion as it helps to stretch the muscles and to relax the mind along with aiding my mental health. I also try to set aside to go for a walk as the fresh air has a really calming influence on me and helps me to sleep at night.

Chronic pain solution three - Spending time with my partner

When I spend time with my partner I always feel more relaxed and good about myself which helps to bring my chronic pain down. We tend to go for meals out, to the cinema or just to relax at home. Knowing that I have someone in my life who loves and cares about me has made my chronic pain more manageable.

Chronic pain solution four - Spending time with my family

Spending time with my family always helps to ease my chronic pain as I enjoy their company. On a weekly basis I spend time at my uncle's house with my dad and we sometimes go through family stories together and enjoy a lovely meal. I always feel better after spending time with family. I also visit my aunt's house on a regular basis to stay over and having the chance to talk things over with her about how I am feeling makes me feel more calm.

Chronic pain solution five - Reading

I have a passion for reading non-fiction books particularly books on the subject of real crime and delving into a book helps me to take my mind off my chronic pain even if only for half an hour.

Chronic pain solution six - Visiting my favourite coffee shop

At least once a week I will try to visit my favourite coffee shop. This is a very relaxing place to sit and I can watch the world go by. For me personally the coffee shop is a very therapeutic place for me to be and aids in taking my thoughts away from my chronic pain for some time.

Chronic pain and friendships

Chronic pain and forging friendships

Chronic pain and making friends can be extremely difficult. I can honestly say that my last friendship with someone ended around 8 years ago. I would love to meet someone for coffee and a chat at least once a week or even once a month but there are days when my pain becomes so bad that I cannot leave the house. I think people who have never struggled with fibromyalgia and restless legs syndrome themselves have no understanding of the fear that struggling with chronic pain can cause along with the fatigue associated with chronic pain.

Chronic pain for me has also lead to episodes of depression and this sometimes has made me become more distant from others and has had an impact on my ability to socialise. There are also days when I have suffered episodes of loneliness and just a feeling of sadness. I feel like I don't want to be a burden to others with my chronic pain as a lot of people want to go out and enjoy themselves after a long week of working which is understandable.

Fibromyalgia and socialising

My fibromyalgia has caused me on occasion to be very frightened to leave my own house to even venture into town which makes meeting people extremely difficult. Even going to a local bar when I have chronic pain is difficult as I can only sit for a certain amount of time before I need to get up and stretch my legs. My restless legs syndrome started at the age of 24 and has been present for 10 years. I now have to plan my day very carefully when going out and if there is a change in my usual routine in anyway I have a tendency to panic which is not really conducive to making friends as sometimes people expect you to be able to meet up with them at a moment's notice.

Chronic pain and appreciating the simple things in life

Chronic pain and focusing on whats important in life

Prior to going through my experience with chronic pain in the form of fibromyalgia I used to fret over the silliest things such as what people thought about me and I used to be highly materialistic. Now these things mean absolutely nothing to me. If tomorrow I lost all my possessions I would not care one bit. The only things in life I care about now are my family, my partner and my friends. I get annoyed at people who try to foist upon others what the meaning of life is and how they should be living their lives.

How someone lives their life is up to them and nobody else. Just recently I logged onto Facebook and I noticed that this lady had put up a long diatribe on the meaning of life. The crux of her diatribe was that life was what you make it. I don’t believe that at all and I don’t appreciate those who think it is their duty to dictate to others how they should perceive the life they live. Hence the reason why I avoid life coaches as I find them to be of no use whatsoever and in fact they cause me to dive into an even deeper well of depression and despair.

Chronic pain and what we have control over in life

I think there are certain things in life that we have a semblance of control over such as our weight or how we treat others. However, when it comes to our health I think we only have a modicum of control over this and this is also applicable to our career. Following my experience with fibromyalgia I now have no tolerance for those who are fixated on their career, acquiring material possessions and striving to climb the social ladder. I avoid those people at all costs. If I have gone through a day with little to no pain then I am happy.
